Weenat fertigation probe

ROBUST. ACCURATE. MAINTAINABLE.

The ideal probe to optimize your nutrient supply strategy

Give plants what they need, when they need it. That’s the whole purpose of the Weenat Fertigation Probe. Thanks to this sensor, you can control and provide the right combination of nutrients and water.

It precisely measures what’s happening in your substrates or soil, thus allowing farmers to improve their supply management in their irrigation while maximizing yields and reducing costs in nutritional elements.

Fertigation Probe Measurements

2 rods to know nutrient needs

The probe’s 2 10-cm rods measure electrical conductivity and soil water content.

Measurement  Unit Measurement Principle Measurement Range
Electrical conductivity dS/m  Ionic conductivity of soil 0 to 20 dS/m
Volumetric water content  % Soil dielectric permittivity  0 to 100%
Soil temperature °C Transistor thermometry -40 to +60°C

Temperature probe

The soil temperature sensor is located in the probe housing. If you bury it in your plots you will get the soil temperature. In substrates like coconut fiber, you will get the ambient temperature.

Rods for all soil types

This sensor is compatible with crops:

  • In pots
  • Substrates
  • In greenhouses
  • Open field

Sending data to the Weenat application

Sensor data is transmitted in near real-time via low-speed Sigfox, LoRa or LTE-M NB-IoT (4G / 5G) networks, which are energy-efficient.

High-quality equipment

Resistant battery

Like all Weenat sensors, the Weenat Fertigation Probe works wirelessly. Instead, you’ll find an ultra-resistant battery, with a minimum autonomy of 2 years. When empty, your battery can be changed without the intervention of a technician.

What is Fertigation?

Fertigation is a contraction of the words fertilization and irrigation. It’s an agricultural technique consisting of applying soluble fertilizing elements in water through an irrigation system. The objective is to effectively respond to nutrient deficiencies in crops and amend the soil.

Weenat Fertigation probes are therefore used to optimize these inputs and provide the plant with the right quantity throughout its growth.

What are the parameters measured by the Fertigation Probe?

The Weenat connected Fertigation probe is equipped with a Delta T WET150 probe, to monitor in real time and with precision the electrical conductivity of interstitial water (dS/m), soil water content (%) and soil temperature (°C).

If you want to monitor other agro-weather parameters on your plots, the probes can be coupled with one or more other Weenat sensors, such as the rain gauge, anemometer, capacitive probe, tensiometer, frost sensor or leaf wetness sensor.

How does the Weenat Fertigation Probe works

How does the Fertigation probe work?

The Fertigation probe uses an electromagnetic field to measure water content and electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of interstitial water provides an image of the quantity of nutrients.

The sensor measures the electrical conductivity of the substrate or soil (bulk EC = ECb) then we recalculate the electrical conductivity of the water present in this soil (pore water EC = ECp), using equations adapted to the soil/substrate type.

Concretely, an electromagnetic field is applied between the two rods inserted in the soil. We can then deduce the properties (amount of water, amount of ions) by observing how this field is impacted by its environment.

ECp is an indicator used for representing nutrient concentration: the more nutritional elements (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, etc.), i.e., ions in the soil, the greater the electrical conductivity (ECp) will be.

Since properties can vary with temperature, a temperature sensor integrated into the housing allows calibration equations to be compensated as accurately as possible.

Thus the farmer ensures that irrigation is proceeding well and that the concentration of nutritional elements corresponds to the desired program.

Probe installation

How to install the Weenat Fertigation Sensor?

Proper installation of the Fertigation Sensor is essential to guarantee quality measurement.

If you position the sensor in potted crops or in substrates, only the rods should be buried.

If you have crops in greenhouses or in open fields, bury the probe entirely (pin + white part).

Where to install your sensor?

The Weenat Fertigation sensor can be installed in all soil types and substrates:

  • Potted crops
  • Substrates
  • In greenhouses
  • Open field

What volume can the Fertigation Probe measure?

The area of influence is a cylinder 55mm high by 70mm in diameter. It is recommended to place the sensor more than 10cm from objects (planted label, pot, stake, …)
